The main exhibition is situated in the former stables. The inmates began to dig a tunnel in this room after the fourth massacre when 250 (370) people were killed on May 7, 1943. This biggest and coldest room in the barrack was called Zhetler Schafe because its residents were mainly tailors from Dyatlovo (Zhetl), a nearby town.
The model of the labour camp shows a lifeless territory without a single tree. There was no cat, no bird in the camp. “They would have been eaten, if there were any”, - says Jack Kagan. Reconstruction of the tunnel entrance was preceded by archeological research and the findings are presented in the exhibition. There’s also a list of the escapees compiled before the escape and photos of the tunnel project organizers. The Museum is aimed at collecting information about everybody who escaped through the tunnel and their life after the war because its main idea is to show struggle for LIFE which was stronger than death. |
